Ayurvedic Dietics

Food is considered to be the life(prana) and hence for health and disease, food is the cure.A very unique principle in Ayurveda is the viruddha ahara(incompatible foods). Consumption of such foods give rise to diseases.Eating incompatible foods cause free radicals in body.

Ayurveda has identified shad rasas(6 tastes) and 20 types of qualities in any food.The foods are broadly grouped as promoting either cold or heat. Each taste is attributed with various benefits and untoward effects on excess consumption.Each individual is suggested a personalized diet according to his constitution (prakriti).

General Dos & Dont's

  1. No fried, spicy, bakery, synthetic or processed food.
  2. No heavy foodstuffs i.e. take light, easily digestible food.
  3. Avoid refined flour (maida) – prefer wheat flour with husk
  4. Avoid eating stale and leftover food, as it is the biggest source of oxidants
  5. Reduce excess of cold, heavy, oily, sweet, sour and salty food.
  6. No ice creams, cold or iced drinks, packed fruit juices, junk food or preserved food.
  7. Do not eat fruits just after meals.
  8. Do not drink water just before/after meals; take a little amount of water with food if required. Take it 1 to 1and1/2 hours after having meals. Drink lots of warm water to purify entire body
  9. Avoid overeating as well as under eating
  10. Do not skip meals because it can aggravate the liver and bile secretions. And do not eat if you don’t feel hungry, and if it is during meals time – you can have fruits or water.
  11. Avoid tea or coffee as much possible especially after meals.
  12. In between meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner), do not take anything except water, fresh fruit juices, fruits, lemon water/shikanji.
  13. Do not eat food too quickly; chew it properly.
  14. Avoid swimming, running, stair climbing and sex just after having food (any physical activity).
  15. Do not divide your attention by reading, watching TV, working while eating food.
  16. At meals, eat until you are about ¾ full.
  17. Have your last meal at least 2 hrs before going to bed
  18. Regular daily elimination is must.

Ayurveda teaches us how to live more in tune with the earth’s natural rhythms.There are routines for the day, the month, and the year. It teaches us how to flow with the cycles of our life more smoothly.
When one begins to attune themselves with these cycles, they may see dramatic positive changes in their life. Problems we thought we had may seem to disappear. We then come to realize, it wasn’t a problem that we had, it was just that we were out of sync with the natural forces around us.
Some components of a daily routine, or dincharya, include waking up before the sun, cleansing practice, quiet time for contemplation, self massage with specific oils, exercises to suit our constitution and more. These simple acts help to keep our mind,body and soul in balance bring peace and joy into our lives.

General Dos & Dont's

  1. Early to bed and early to rise goes long way in keeping one fit. Go to bed by 10:00 pm. Avoid intense entertainment before going to bed
  2. Exercise on daily basis is necessary. Don’t overdo - exercise only 50% of your capacity.
  3. A brisk walk is beneficial for everyone
  4. Learn and practice some technique of reducing everyday stress like reiki, pranayam, sudarshan kriya, meditations etc.
  5. Walk a mile after dinner
  6. Be careful about the hygiene of your body
  7. Have a positive attitude
  8. Calming music may reduce restlessness; boosts brain chemicals and improves behavior.
  9. Always stay active, physically as well as mentally
  10. Avoid extremes of temperatures
  11. A warm oil scalp massage, once or twice a week, stimulates the scalp and helps balance the mind.
  12. A full body massage is good for everyone
  13. If your job is sedentary, take short breaks and regular walks.
  14. Engage your brain continuously in some sort of mental activities to keep it working well.
